Discerning Our Path: A Reflection on the St. Angela Merici Parish Data

Our faith journey is often one of quiet prayer, but there are moments when we are called to look outward—to see our community through the lens of data and shared reality. Recently, St. Angela Merici Parish released a comprehensive infographic detailing the economic and emotional landscape of our neighborhood and parish.

As we enter this “time of discernment,” the data provides a sobering yet hopeful foundation for our upcoming Parish Assembly. Here is a look at what the numbers tell us about our mission to be “Christ for Others.”

Understanding Our Neighbors: The Economic Gap

The data reveals a significant disparity between the broader community (within a 15-mile radius) and our registered parishioners.

  • Poverty Rates: While 22% of the general population in our area lives below the poverty line, that number drops to 14% among registered parishioners.
  • Income Levels: The contrast is even sharper in higher brackets. While 53% of the local community earns between $50k–$149k, a notable 60% of our parish falls into this category. Furthermore, the parish has a higher percentage of households earning $150k and above compared to the surrounding area.

In Southern California, where the poverty line for a family of four is approximately $35,000, these statistics remind us that many of our neighbors are struggling with the basic costs of living.

Beyond the Wallet: Top Life Concerns

Service isn’t just about financial support; it’s about meeting people where they are emotionally and spiritually. The community survey highlighted the heavy burdens our neighbors carry:

  1. Personal Health Problems: Cited by over 50% of respondents.
  2. Guilt and Past Regrets: A major concern for nearly 45% of the community.
  3. Loneliness and Mental Health: Issues like depression and the struggle to make friends rank high, suggesting a deep need for connection and belonging.

An Invitation to Action

We aren’t starting from scratch. Our Existing Social Outreach Ministries—including Active Christians Today (A.C.T.), Bread of Angels, and Ministry to the Sick and Homebound—are already doing vital work. However, the data asks us: Is it enough?

“How are we being invited to further extend the compassion and generosity of God to others in our Parish and in our community?”

Save the Date: Parish Assembly

We invite every member of our faith community to join us in discussing these findings. This isn’t just a meeting about numbers; it’s a meeting about people, hopes, and dreams.

  • When: Friday, May 15, 6:30 PM – 9:00 PM
  • Where: Parish Hall
  • Action: Scan the QR code in the parish flyer to sign up!

As you reflect on these statistics this week, we encourage you to read Matthew 25:31-46. Let us listen together for the grace of understanding as we seek new ways to live the Gospel mission.

Will we see you at the Assembly? How does this data change your perspective on our local mission?
